Southland effluent pond to turn methane into electricity in Southland first

The No 8 wire mentality is alive and well in Southland, with a system that will generate electricity from cow manure set to be up and running about a month from now.

Venture Southland business and strategic projects group manager Steve Canny said a methane recovery project at an effluent pond on a 950-cow dairy farm between Isla Bank and Thornbury was a way to help limit greenhouse gas emissions while also helping farmers economically.

Renewable energy bid selection criteria in SA flawed

The current bid selection criteria of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement (REIPPP) programme’s narrow evaluation and spatial blindness favours projects that are not necessarily the least-cost option for renewable energy at the point of consumption. This not only impacts energy costs for Eskom, and therefore for consumers, but also creates transmission congestion and delayed connections to an already constrained grid, incurring further costs.

Renewable energy (RE) generation forms part of the national integrated resource plan for electricity, IRP 2010-2030, a plan adopted by the DoE in 2011 that establishes an energy generation mix and profile for South Africa up to 2030. The REIPPP programme is the implementation vehicle for RE in terms of this plan.

Eskom on track for a summer without load shedding

South Africa has been spared load shedding for over 67 days, but Eskom still sends updates, warning people that the “system is constrained but stable today, with no load shedding being anticipated”.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe had a brief holiday in October, a clear sign that the hot seat is no longer burning.

SA boosts power output after maintenance

JOHANNESBURG- South Africa added 1 286 megawatts (MW) to its national grid on Thursday when two generating units were brought back online following an extensive “overhaul”, power utility Eskom said.

Eskom said electricity supplies would continue to be tight as it carried out other plant maintenance.

Eskom to plan future grid for renewable energy connections

THE next big priority for Eskom will be planning its future transmission grid to ensure that it is able to connect increasingly widespread sources of power generation, senior GM Andrew Etzinger said on Tuesday.

He urged interested parties to attend the utility’s open Transmission Development Plan Forum on Friday where they will have an opportunity to give input into SA’s future transmission plans.

UP power regulator advocates mandatory cogeneration for sugar mills

Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has advocated the idea of making energy co-generation mandatory for all upcoming sugar mills.

Speaking as chief guest at a programme organised by North Indian Sugarcane and Sugar Technologists’ Association (NISSTA) here yesterday, UPERC chairman Desh Deepak Verma laid stress to encourage generation of bagasse-based green energy generation by mills. Bagasse is a sugar byproduct and is commonly used as fuel to produce thermal energy.
