CSP has a bright future in S.Africa’s energy mix, according to the IEA

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) should be compared on its position to deliver clean power after sunset rather than its cost. This was emphasised by Cedric Philibert, Senior Analyst for the Renewable Energy Division at the International Energy Agency during a briefing on Tuesday.

Stakeholders with a vested interested in CSP technology and who are dedicated to achieving a less carbon base energy system, gathered at a conference in Cape Town earlier this week, to discuss the status of the clean power technology and its place in South Africa’s energy sector.

Eskom to plan future grid for renewable energy connections

THE next big priority for Eskom will be planning its future transmission grid to ensure that it is able to connect increasingly widespread sources of power generation, senior GM Andrew Etzinger said on Tuesday.

He urged interested parties to attend the utility’s open Transmission Development Plan Forum on Friday where they will have an opportunity to give input into SA’s future transmission plans.

UP power regulator advocates mandatory cogeneration for sugar mills

Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) has advocated the idea of making energy co-generation mandatory for all upcoming sugar mills.

Speaking as chief guest at a programme organised by North Indian Sugarcane and Sugar Technologists’ Association (NISSTA) here yesterday, UPERC chairman Desh Deepak Verma laid stress to encourage generation of bagasse-based green energy generation by mills. Bagasse is a sugar byproduct and is commonly used as fuel to produce thermal energy.

Doosan announces ambitious fuel cell project in South Korea

A new residential complex in Busan, South Korea’s second city, is to be power with on-site combined heat and power fuel cells. Under the terms of a new deal between Samsung C&T Corp., based in Seoul, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and DoBusanosan Fuel Cell, Doosan will manufacture and ship 70 fuel cells that will produce 30.8 MW.

The fuel cell systems will be used to heat and power as many as 71,500 Korean homes. Samsung will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor while KHNP and Busan will share ownership of the fuel cells.

SA’s first electricity-powered public transport to hit Cape Town

In the near future, 60 000 weekly MyCiTi bus commuters in Cape Town will travel in vehicles that run solely on electricity or biofuel, helping ease the pressure of gas emissions placed on the environment.
This was announced by the City of Cape Town during the African Union of Public Transport (UATP) Workshop on Best Practice in Africa, held in the Mother City last week.

On-site cogen for vodka giant

Plans for the development of a sugar mill and cogeneration plant have been revealed by ABSOLUT Distillers Inc.
According to local press reports, the Pernod Ricard-owned company plans to construct the site in the Philippines with an investment of at least PHP500 million (US$10.8 million).

Casino resort beating the odds through micro grids

Casino resorts or Rancherias in California are staying ahead of possible power outages through the use of micro grids.

Facilities such as the Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort can go off-grid when heat spikes or natural disasters threaten power supplies to the facilities according to a report in the Sacramento Bee.

The paper noted that the recent Butte fire which caused much devastation in the region failed to stop the casino resort from functioning because of a specialized network of generators and electrical equipment that gave the Rancheria temporary energy independence from the regional power grid operated by Pacific Gas and Electric.
