Growing appreciation of on-site power among US businesses

COSPP – A study produced by Deloitte indicates that more than half of large US businesses generate power on site.

The new study finds 55% of large US businesses generate some portion of their electricity on site, representing a growing trend across the last few years.

Almost 80% of the sampled businesses see reducing electricity costs as critical to maintaining a competitive advantage, and most have now put in place formal energy reduction goals.

Long Island hospital order for CHP microturbine

COSPP – Tecogen Inc has announced the sale of a CM-75 combined heat and power (CHP) module for installation at a hospital in Long Island, New York.

The unit is being sold to a local Energy Services Company (ESCO) which will replace an existing outdated cogeneration system.

How electricity powers the revenue of municipalities

Mail & Guardian – Electricity has become an emotionally charged subject thanks to Eskom’s problems, the resultant load-shedding and the price hikes consumers have experienced over the past few years.

The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved a guideline increase of 12.2% for municipalities, which came into effect at the beginning of this month, over and above the hike Eskom has been granted.

OECD urges reforms to address South Africa’s ‘structural’ electricity constraint

Mining Weekly – The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s (OECD’s) latest economic survey of South Africa urges government to increase private electricity generation and pursue fundamental market reforms to address the country’s growth-sapping “structural” electricity constraint. Flanked by Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene at the release of the report in Johannesburg, OECD secretary-general Angel Gurría said the current electricity shortage was damaging the South African economy, which the organisation expected to grow by only 1.9% in 2015.

Australia’s largest off grid solar plant to service mine

COSPP – Construction is set to commence this month on one of the world’s largest integrated solar installations used to power a mine.

The facility will reduce dependency on diesel fuel and provide Sandfire Resource’s DeGrussa mine in Western Australia, with 80 per cent of its daytime energy needs and slash carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes a year.

Cogeneration body concerned at omission of CHP

COSPP – COGEN Europe chief Fiona Riddoch has expressed her concern at the failure of the European Commission to include power and heating in its ‘Summer Package’ announcement this week.

The announcement provided detail on next steps for the Energy Union and Riddoch says clearer links needed to be made between power and heating & cooling.

The European Commission  Summer Package  (comprising a Communication on a new energy market design, a communication on a new deal for energy consumers, a proposal for the review of the energy labelling directive and a proposal for EU-ETS 2021-2030) aims at advancing the thinking on how to address  important issues in the  existing EU legislative landscape, preparing the way for a legislative cycle in 2016.

India’s per capita electricity consumption touches 1010 kWh

Live Mint – In an indication of growing appetite for electricity in India, the country’s per capita electricity consumption has reached 1010 kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2014-15, compared with 957 kWh in 2013-14 and 914.41 kWh in 2012-13, according to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India’s apex power sector planning body.
“The per capita electricity consumption reached 1010 kWh some time back,” said a senior government official, requesting anonymity.
But experts are far from enthused from the increasing consumption figure.

How to save on your Eskom electricity bill

My Broadband – Eskom’s acting CEO Brian Molefe has given South Africans two options: pay more for electricity or face more load shedding – which will damage the economy.

On 8 May, Eskom made an urgent application to Nersa to increase the electricity tariff by 25.3% for the 2015/2016 financial year. This included the 12.69% price increase Nersa had already approved.

Local municipalities have also requested price increases, with Mookgophong municipality in Limpopo applying for a 35% tariff hike.

Transnet’s CFO seconded to Eskom

Cape Business News – Transnet’s Group Chief Financial Officer Anoj Singh has been seconded to Eskom as its acting Chief Financial Officer.

“The Boards of Directors at Transnet and Eskom have agreed to second Transnet Group Chief Financial Officer, Anoj Singh, as acting Chief Financial Officer to Eskom for a period of six months,” said the boards of Eskom and Transnet.
